NOURISHING RICE BOLUS THERAPY
Njavara Rice Bundle Massage for Nourishment & Strength at Chittattinkara Vaidyasala, Kesavadasapuram

Njavarakizhi (Njavara = a special type of Ayurvedic rice, Kizhi = bolus/bundle) is a highly nourishing and rejuvenating Ayurvedic treatment unique to Kerala. Cooked Njavara rice — a specific medicinal rice variety (Shashtika Shali) with powerful therapeutic properties — is tied into cloth bundles (potlis) and dipped in a warm decoction of Bala herb and cow's milk. These warm, medicated bundles are then used to massage the entire body in synchronized strokes. The treatment simultaneously provides deep nourishment to the muscles, skin, and nervous system while eliminating toxins.
At Chittattinkara Vaidyasala, Kesavadasapuram, Trivandrum, our trained therapists follow traditional protocols for Njavarakizhi under the supervision of experienced BAMS vaidyas. The Njavara rice is specially sourced and the decoction is prepared fresh for each session.
Njavarakizhi is used for musculoskeletal conditions, skin diseases, muscular dystrophy, muscle atrophy, rheumatic conditions, neurological weakness, and as a powerful rejuvenation therapy. It is one of the most effective treatments for building strength and vitality.
Both are effective but serve different purposes. Njavarakizhi emphasizes nourishment and strength-building while Elakizhi focuses more on pain relief and inflammation reduction. Our vaidyas often combine both treatments for comprehensive musculoskeletal care.
A typical course is 7–14 daily sessions. For chronic conditions, 21-day courses may be recommended. Each session lasts 45–60 minutes.
Njavarakizhi is excellent as a standalone treatment and also works powerfully in combination with Abhyangam, Pizhichil, and Panchakarma for comprehensive results.
